The basis on which this website is made available: what it is, what it is not, and the law that governs it.
These terms govern your use of this website. By using it you accept them. They do not govern any engagement you may have with the firm as a client; that is governed by our letter of engagement and our terms of business, which take precedence over anything on this site.
This site is information, not advice
The content on this site is general information only and does not constitute legal advice.
Nothing here is advice on your circumstances, since we do not know what they are. The law changes, its application depends entirely on facts, and material that is accurate in general can be badly wrong in a particular case. Please do not act, or refrain from acting, on the basis of anything you read here without taking advice on your own position.
Where a page names a statute or describes a procedure, it does so in summary and for orientation. It is not a substitute for reading the provision or for advice on how it applies to you.
Using this site does not make you a client
No solicitor–client relationship arises from reading this site, from sending a message through the contact form, or from an initial conversation. We become your solicitors only when we have carried out the checks we are required to carry out, confirmed that we are able to act, and confirmed our engagement in writing.
Until that has happened:
- Information you send us is not covered by legal professional privilege. Please do not send privileged or highly sensitive material through this website.
- We are not acting for you and are not monitoring any deadline or time limit on your behalf. If a time limit is approaching, telephone us rather than writing.
Jurisdiction
This site describes the law of Scotland unless it says otherwise. The firm is a Scottish practice, and everything published here should be read as a statement about Scots law.
Individual members of the firm are also admitted in England and Wales and in the Republic of Ireland, and advice on those systems is given by a member qualified in the relevant jurisdiction. For any other country we do not hold ourselves out as advisers on its law: we instruct lawyers who are qualified there and co-ordinate their advice with ours, and that advice remains the responsibility of the firm giving it.
Nothing on this site should be taken as a representation about the law of a country in which no member of the firm is qualified.
Intellectual property
The text, design, layout and images on this site belong to the firm or are used with permission, and are protected by copyright and other rights.
You may read, print and share pages of this site for your own information or for the internal purposes of your business. You may quote short extracts provided you identify the firm as the source and link to the page quoted. You may not reproduce material from this site commercially, republish it as your own, or use it to train an automated system, without our written consent.
Our name and wordmark may not be used in a way that suggests an association with, or endorsement by, the firm.
Links to other sites
Where we link to another organisation's website — a regulator, a court service, a public register — we do so because we think it is useful. We do not control those sites, we are not responsible for their content, and a link is not an endorsement of anything else they publish.
